M. Seijffers

M. Seijffers was the chazzan of Rotterdam in the years 1952-1985. He recorded many melodies from chazzan Vleesshouwer (Groningen) on tapes, which were later converted to the double CD Ahawat Olam. I used a cassette for the main part because the quality is slightly better. Further, the cassette has an introduction and some explanation, which were partly converted to text on the CD cover and the enclosed booklet.

Introduction: "follows a collection of chazzanut from chazzan J.I. Vleeschhouwer, former chief chazzan of the NIG Groningen. Collected and written down by B.M Stern from Groningen in the year 5688, 1928." Vleeschhouwer was chief chazzan in Groningen in the years 1877-1909.

The book קול יהודה by Stern has 171 pages with sheet music. The sample sheet from this book is melody nr 7 on CD2, קדיש 7 & 8 פסח & שמיני עצרת melody 2.  A scan of the whole book can be found on the Sheet Music page.

At the end of the introduction Mr Stern writes (see below): "If in future a collection of chazzanut, customary in the Netherlands, come about, then I hope that my work too will be able to contribute to keeping this chazzanut for the future generations". It took 91 years for this collection to be made, and we are happy to add Mr Stern's work to it!.
