Onlangs zat ik naast een nichtje van Raoul Wallenberg. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog redde de Zweedse diplomaat Wallenberg duizenden Hongaarse Joden. Hij was verbonden aan de Zweedse ambassade in Boedapest. Met een door hem uitgereikt document van het neutrale Zweden wisten Joden zich gered uit de handen van de nazi’s. Na de inval van de Sovjet-troepen werd Raoul Wallenberg met zijn chauffeur gearresteerd en door de Russen weggevoerd. Sindsdien ontbreekt ieder spoor van hen. Raoul Wallenberg, redder van duizenden Joden, moet in Russische gevangenschap zijn overleden.
In het Anne Frank Huis zat ik naast zijn nichtje Marie Dupuy. Zij en haar zuster zetten zich in voor hun oom Raoul. Hij kan niet meer in leven zijn, maar informatie is het minste wat ze kunnen trachten te krijgen. Het lukt maar niet. Opmerkelijk genoeg werkt de Zweedse regering ook niet men hen mee.
Ik sprak haar bij een bijzondere bijeenkomst. In het Anne Frank Huis kreeg Barbara Mooyaart een medaille die de naam van de Zweedse diplomaat draagt. De International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation had besloten aan deze hoogbejaarde inwoonster van Amersfoort de medaille uit te reiken. Zij is het die in de jaren ’50 Het Achterhuis, het beroemde dagboek van Anne Frank, in het Engels vertaalde met als titel A Diary of a Young Girl. De Nederlandse editie trok niet meer dan een oplage van 8.000 exemplaren. Na de Engelse vertaling kreeg het boek zijn vlucht die het sindsdien niet meer heeft onderbroken.
Bij de uitreiking mocht ik het woord tot mevrouw Mooyaart richten.

And another Jewish expression – not only Jewish in Dutch as well, says the last one is the most cherished one: Mrs Mooyaart-Doubleday, you who will receive the medal in remembrance and in honour of Raoul Wallenberg.
It is my sincere admiration which brings me here to honour you Mrs Mooyaart; Dr Mooyaart. You followed in the steps of those who helped Anne Frank, her sister Margot, her parents and those others which they helped to hide in the Achterhuis. By bringing the message of Anne Frank to the English speaking world.
And we all know what came from it, after your translation was published in 1954. We just have to witness the long rows waiting every day; here at the Prinsengracht, to physically grasp the idea what this translation has brought the world.
We as Jewish community today, here in The Netherlands, here in Europe, can hold on to the legacy of Anne Frank. With the Anne Frank Foundation, the Anne Frank Stichting, custodians of the House and the diary, we the Jewish people of today face the fact that nor the Holocaust, nor Anne Frank’s so widely distributed book, have caused discrimination to stop, have ended persecution, have finally brought the message that Jews nor any other minority should be subject to annihilation just as the Nazi’s tried to realize in regard to the Jews than.
Anne Frank came from Germany, Anne Frank fled Germany and was brought back by her fellow Germans to German soil that absorbed her body. But Anne Frank, thank God, left behind her notebooks. And Otto Frank bestowed upon you, Mrs Mooyaart, the task to translate the published diary into English.
Let me finish my short presentation with the words of a 14 or 15 years old girl, who has developed her thoughts and put them into writing right here, in this house, the Achterhuis.
Anne Frank wrote: How wonderful that no one has to wait not even one moment starting to improve the world.
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
May the – unfortunately too – unique bravery of Raoul Wallenberg and the unparalleled thinking and expressing of Anne Frank be an example of courage and devotion to what they both aimed for: improving the world.
You, Mrs Mooyaart, have shown us the way how to follow in their footsteps. We all commend you for that with great admiration. Best expressed by bestowing upon you the centennial medal by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation.
