Het NIK heeft zijn medeleven betuigd na de terreuraanslag op een synagoge in Pittsburgh waarbij elf synagogegangers om het leven zijn gebracht. “Wij delen in uw pijn en verdriet”, schrijven NIK-voorzitter David Goudsmit en alg. secretaris Ruben Vis aan de synagoge Tree of Life – Etz Chaim waar het bloedbad werd aangericht.
Hun brief stuurden zij ook aan de Jewish Federation van Pittsburgh en aan de Noord-Amerikaanse sectie van het World Jewish Congress waarvan het NIK lid is. De Jewish Federation reageerde onmiddellijk en bedankte voor de boodschap vamn het NIK, daarbij duidelijk makend dat deze veel betekent voor de Joodse gemeenschap in Pittsburgh.

Op de eerstvolgende sjabbat wordt in onder meer de sjoel van Bussum stil gestaan bij de tragedie in Pittsburgh. Eerder deze week ook in sjoel Amstelveen en Amos. Joodse Gemeente-voorzitter Paul Joseph schreef aan de kehillaleden van Bussum: “Dit verschrikkelijke gebeuren heeft ook ons diep geraakt. Wij voelen ons solidair met de getroffenen en hun families, want deze wandaad was tegen ons allemaal gericht. Hun pijn is ook onze pijn.
A.s. sjabbat zullen wij een Jizkor voor de slachtoffers uitspreken. Onze sjoel is een plek waar wij onze vreugdes en helaas ook onze verdrietige momenten met elkaar willen delen. Verbondenheid maakt ons sterker en bied troost.”
De tekst van de brief die het NIK schreef, luidt:
On behalf of NIK – Organization of Jewish Communities in The Netherlands, we come to you to express our great sorrow and share in the grief of the loss of members of your community, who were brutely murdered while celebrating Shabbath.
We send our condolences and deepest sympathies to the families of those who were brutally murdered and to the entire Pittsburgh Jewish community at this difficult time.
We pray for the wounded, both the members of the Jewish community as well as the security officers bravely trying to stop the murderer who entered your building, profaned the solemn service in which the victims participated, and took the lives of the innocent ones.
Here in the Netherlands, far away in travel distance, we are though so close to you in our pain and sorrow, we held special prayer services in several congregations, while the members of the Bnai Akiva youth movement lit candles for the eleven deadly victims, said Tehilim and prayed for their souls.
It is shocking to witness how easily antisemitism can turn from hateful rhetoric and incitement into the most extreme kind of violence.
May the Jewish people where ever we congregate be spared for any further violence and persecution. May Israel dwell safely and let the redemption come for Zion, so may it be His will.
